The $10,000 Music API Challenge

MP3tunes is having a music contest. You won't have to sing or perform to win. You won't get an American Idol record contract but you could have a bigger impact on the future of music than any media-manufactured star.

MP3tunes Locker on the TiVo
MP3tunes is working on a system that connects every music device into a seamless personal music experience. At the heart of this system is your own music library -- the songs you own. (If you don't have your Free Music Locker yet, you should get one -- we may not always offer an entirely free locker with unlimited storage and our backlog is getting larger!) Every piece of electronic gear you own will be connected to the Music Locker including your PC, phone, game console, PDA, home stereo, TV, handheld game device, Internet radio and any other web-enabled device imaginable.. All of these devices will play your music, making it truly portable and available everywhere. We've made great strides with devices like the TiVo and the Logitech Squeezebox and we are just getting started! This is where the contest comes into play.

MP3tunes Locker on the Logitech Squeezebox
MP3tunes has created the largest and most efficient personal music storage system in the world -- housing your music in a password protected locker. More importantly, we have documented how any web-enabled device in the world can access the MP3tunes Music Locker. This information (called an "API" in technical terms) is now fully public and available for all to implement. The goal is to get a wide range of interfaces for your music. So we're offering a $1000 award in each of the categories listed below to anyone who creates the best interface:
  1. DVR/TV
  2. Mobile Phone Application
  3. Desktop Player (stand alone app)
  4. Game Console
  5. Web User Interface
  6. Widget/Gadget
  7. PDA/Web Tablet
  8. Handheld Game Device
  9. Internet Radio Device
  10. Internet Enabled Appliance
The $10,000 Music API Challenge will run from September 20th, 2007 to November 5th, 2007. Winners will be announced on November 21st, 2007. For more information, official rules and how to participate click here. We recommend that developers join the Backstage Pass program(it's free) and visit the MP3tunes Developer Wiki. Changing the world doesn't require a big contract and media glitz. I'm confident your participation will help open the doors to music freedom.

For all you music lovers, we'll be sharing the winners with you so you can enjoy the benefits of having your music available on these types of devices. Expect some exciting new ways to experience your music! If you want to get more involved join the MP3tunes Backstage Pass program. You'll get to test the contest submissions, rate your favorites, and earn points for cool stuff from MP3tunes.
